JiaYi is known as the gateway to some of Taiwan’s most impressive mountains. A low cost of living, and lots of things to see, make this historic city a great place to get to understand Taiwanese culture.
JiaYi is a smaller city of about 250,000 people. It has a very affordable cost of living, and a great opportunity for a cultural experience. Located right on the Tropic of Cancer, JiaYi has great weather most of the year with hot and humid summers and warm and drier winters. With only two schools in JiaYi, the teachers have a strong connection with each other and with their local friends.
Located between Taichung and Tainan, JiaYi is full of surprises. The most famous attraction is nearby Alishan. This mountain is one of Taiwan’s most famous natural landmarks, and a must see site. Looking for something more adventurous? Then you can try to climb Jade Mountain – 3,952 m (12,966 ft), one the highest in Asia East of the Himalayas.
This is a great spot for someone who is looking to save money, have a real cultural experience, likes to get out and explore beautiful mountains and enjoy life at a slower pace. With the High speed rail, the big cities of Taiwan are 20 to 90 minutes away, so they are always within reach.
Most teachers here share apartments, although there is a pretty good selection of single and shared housing available. Two bedroom apartments range from NT$5,000-10,000 per month for an entire apartment.
